Using a VPN or VPS With a Prop Firm

Prop firms monitor IP addresses to detect account sharing, restricted countries and copy trading. That affects how you use VPNs, VPS servers and trade while travelling.

VPS: generally fine

A virtual private server keeps EAs running around the clock and is widely allowed, especially at firms that permit EAs such as FTMO and FundedNext. Some firms ask you to use a consistent location.

VPN: use carefully

A VPN hides your real location. Logging in from a restricted country, or from many locations, can trigger reviews or breaches. Several firms’ terms prohibit masking your location.

Travelling

  • Tell support before you travel if your firm asks.
  • Avoid trading from countries the firm restricts.
  • Don’t share devices or accounts with other traders on the same IP.

Why it matters

IP overlaps between accounts are a common flag for account sharing or group trading, which can lead to denied payouts.

Choosing a VPS

If you run EAs, choose a VPS located near your firm’s trading servers for lower latency, keep it dedicated to your own accounts, and log in from a consistent location. Don’t share a VPS with other traders, since shared IP addresses can be flagged as account sharing.

Before travelling

  • Check whether the country you’re visiting is restricted.
  • Ask support whether you should notify them.
  • Avoid public Wi-Fi for logins; use your phone’s hotspot.
